Inspired By is a collection of tracks that fit the theme of a film or TV show I’m watching. We start with True Detective: Night Country. We’re halfway through, and I wonder how this will all end. In this episode, Hank is shady as fuck. Pete’s marriage gets worse with every episode. I want to believe that Qavvik is a good guy 🙏🏾. Lastly, Demon ‘Your mother says hello’ Lund and the Annie K video - what in the Stephen King is going on?

Featuring Leftfield, The Prodigy, The XX, RJD2, and Broken Bells.

Enjoy 🥰.

While Hank leads the search for Clark, Prior asks Danvers about the murder-suicide case that drove a wedge between her and Navarro; Navarro and Danvers seek out a local hairdresser for insight on Annie.

At this point, there are solid arguments for either Danvers or Navarro killing Wheeler. My money is on Navarro, though. In episode two, she seemed okay with the outcome.

Twisted Nerve

Go tell your dad to get rid of his hillbilly friends, or I’m gonna call immigration on his Russian mail-order bride!

Tinder

NSG

Is Danvers really spending all that time on fantasy football and Tinder? Or is she the one catfishing Hank? I so want this to be true.

Mrs. Robinson

Simon & Garfunkel

Poor Pete. He’s so naive at times. But not too naive to believe Danvers about Wheeler.

Quid Pro Quo (feat. Munich Symphony)

Howard Shore

Qavvik, please don’t be a bad guy.

Poison

Brent Faiyaz

The water is black, Caribou are flinging themselves off cliffs, and there are lots of stillborn births - is it all because of the mine?

Face Tattoo

Dylan Fraser

Danvers clearly worries about Leah, especially seeing the similarities between her and Annie K. But man, these scenes are tough to watch.

The Ghost Inside

Broken Bells

Navarro has to tell Danvers what Holden said. But will Danvers want to hear it? Probably not.

Deep Blue Sea (feat. Sivan Talmor)

Yehezkel Raz

It’s not looking good for Julia.

Black Water

The Doobie Brothers

With each episode, we’re seeing the many layers of Danvers. She did look genuinely shaken when Leah told her about yet another stillbirth. Even though no words were said when she went to pay her respects, it was clear that she understood the pain of losing a child.

Noticeable Mentions

  • I’m glad that the show is humanising Annie K It would be too easy to see her as a victim only and not a fully-rounded person.

  • Danvers thinking that Pete is a hacker because he’s under 30 and could unlock a phone. I swear this is my whole extended family because they think I must be able to solve every IT problem they have as I use a computer.

  • Pete doesn’t believe Danvers's story. It was clear he didn’t believe her about Wheeler.

  • What was Danvers's ex really like? I can’t help but notice that Holden is front and centre in her grief. Was her ex responsible for the accident?

  • Oranges If we follow what happens in The Godfather, then does that mean Julia and Navarro are going to die?

  • Quid pro quo. Yes or no? Yes or no, Clarice? In this instance, ‘poor little Catherine’ isn’t waiting. But Qavvik is desperate to get some relationship intimacy with Navarro. I’m rooting for them. Navarro, let him love you, woman! (But I’m hoping he isn’t too good to be true).

Thoughts

Is six episodes enough?

At the halfway point, what screams out is that six episodes are not enough! Considering that previous seasons were eight episodes long, it will be interesting to see how it concludes. What are the chances of all loose ends being wrapped up? How will the last three episodes be paced? So much has happened so far that critical moments could be overlooked. Fingers crossed that Night Country sticks the landing.

We’re all in the shit bowl now.

I’m sad that articles and commentary about the show are driven by the need for clicks and likes. The continued over-the-top and hateful comments about the showrunner, actors, and this season including from Nic Pizzolatto (my guy, were you not responsible for season 2?), proves the internet, especially social media, is a shit bowl. I have never felt the need to expend so much energy on something I don’t like. That is weird.
